Celebrating 25 Years
October 2007
In today’s climate, the independent builders merchant is an increasingly scarce variety, where many have been acquired by national chains or simply ceased to trade. However there’s one family run company that’s bucking the trend.
Currently celebrating 25 years of trading, Kellaway Building Supplies has grown to become the fastest growing builders merchant in the South West, according to the KPMG Fast Track 2007 report. With an annual turnover of £19 million plus, the merchant now has 10 businesses around Bristol, South Gloucestershire, North Somerset, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire.
Of course it hasn’t always been this way. Back in 1982 when Ernest Milligan set up the first Kellaway branch (named after its’ Kellaway Avenue location), the first day’s takings of £32.92 were a far cry from the numbers the company deals with today. The original delivery vehicle was a MINI van, poles apart from the familiar orange and blue 16 and 26 tonne crane offload trucks the company presently operates.
Ernest’s son, Julian Milligan took over as Managing Director in 1996 when Ernest retired. Since then the company has grown at the rate of approximately one branch per annum via acquisition or organic growth and now employs over 145 people.
One aspect of the business which the merchant is proud of is its’ reputation over the years for achieving a high level of customer service.
“Our trade and DIY customers both old and new appreciate the excellent service we deliver, which we achieve through the dedication of our knowledgeable and friendly staff, a large number of whom have been with the company for many years. Originally such excellent service was born out of being a family run business, however as we grow this is something we do not wish to lose sight of, and our customers like that personal touch.” Says Julian.
