Kellaway Building Supplies has donated materials to a Bristol family in need as part of the BBC 1 series DIY SOS: The Big Build.
The Pollard family were selected to appear on the programme after spending the past five years commuting 100 miles a day to a specialist rehabilitation centre in Gloucester Hospital to visit their son Ryan. Ryan was diagnosed with a brain condition when he was 19. He began suffering painful headaches before doctors discovered a blocked ventricle in his brain, which has left him with specialist needs and requiring full time care.
“They couldn’t get the wheelchair in [before], because the doors weren’t big enough and he couldn’t stay, because there weren’t any facilities for him to. Dave (Ryan’s father) bought a specially adapted van and would drive to Gloucester, bring him here then take him back again and it’s taken its toll, but now it will all be over.”
“I’ve been really emotional all week…the people behind the scenes who give the equipment and time, they’re fantastic” Steve, Ryan’s uncle said.
The Bristol based builders’ merchant, who’s flagship store is based in Horfield not far from the Hartcliffe family’s home were able to supply a thorough list of building materials for the project, from concrete blocks and cement to drainage pipes and plasterboard.
This renovation not only enables Ryan’s parents to bring him home, but it means that a family that have been split up can be together again and a weight can be lifted from their shoulders.
Kellaway was delighted to provide the materials for the build. Marketing Manager, Alex Priddle said “We take pride in supporting the local communities around our branches. The Pollards are very deserving of this renovation and we were glad to be able to contribute along with the 200 local tradesmen. We wish Ryan and his family the best and hope they will be very happy in their new home.”
Ryan’s brother Darren, was thrilled with the company’s contribution stating “Thank you to Kellaway Building Supplies for donating the materials. We’re all so happy to have Ryan home.”
