From 1st September, the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) will begin a six-month crackdown on light goods vehicles, with a particular focus on those carrying building products and site equipment. This affects many of our customers – builders, maintenance contractors, and landscaping specialists etc.
The initiative follows a tragic incident in which an unsecured scaffolding board fell from a vehicle and fatally injured an 11-year-old child. It serves as a heartbreaking reminder of why load safety is critical.
What the DVSA will be looking for
- Overloaded vehicles
- Insecure or poorly strapped loads
- Vehicle defects that compromise road safety
Drivers found in breach could face fines, points, delays – or even the loss of a licence. For tradespeople, losing your licence doesn’t just mean losing the right to drive it can also mean losing work, income, and reputation.
Why this matters
At Kellaway, safety is our top priority. We want to do everything we can to help keep our customers, their businesses, and the wider public safe. The DVSA’s campaign is not about catching people out – it’s about preventing incidents before they happen.
Even one loose item in a vehicle can have devastating consequences. By taking a few extra minutes to strap down and secure your load properly, you’re protecting yourself, your livelihood, and everyone else on the road.
What you can do now
✔ Always check your vehicle is roadworthy before setting off.
✔ Use load straps or other securing equipment to keep everything in place.
✔ Avoid overloading – stick within your vehicle’s weight limits.
✔ If in doubt, double-check. A quick safety check now could save a life.
If you need to stock up on straps, we've got you covered. Click here to buy online or ask at your local Kellaway branch.
