What is Composite Decking and Should You Choose it for Your Garden Project?

When you're looking for a decking material, you have a lot of options. You can choose from wood, composites, or even plastic. With so many choices available, it can be difficult to figure out which one is best for your needs.

If you're looking for an alternative to wooden decking, composite decking is a great option. This material is made from recycled materials and has a variety of benefits over traditional wood. However, there are also drawbacks that you should consider before making your final decision.

In this article, we will discuss what composite decking is and why it's become so popular in recent years. We'll also talk about some of the problems that can arise from using this material in your outdoor space.

COMPOSITE DECKING: AN EXPLANATION

Composite decking consists of a mix of plastic and wood fibres. This makes it more resistant to damage than wooden decks, which are susceptible to cracking, splitting and warping due to changes in temperature or moisture content. Composite decking is also more flexible than wood and less prone to splintering when exposed to sunlight or rainwater.

There are two common types of composite decking, capped and uncapped wood-plastic composites. Mould and mildew can easily spread through uncapped wood composite because of the exposed wood elements. Because of the plastic cap, capped wood composite boards are more resilient.

WHY USE COMPOSITE DECKING INSTEAD OF TRADITIONAL WOOD?

When compared to wooden decking, composite ones are easier to care for and will continue to look great for years to come. Composite decking doesn't need to be sanded, stained, or painted as wood decking does. Soap and water are all you need to keep your composite in pristine condition.

Durability

In addition to being impervious to water and insects, composite decking will not decay or weaken over time. Composite boards will not split or distort either. The decking is also splinter-free because it is made of recycled plastic. Because of their durability and resistance to water and slips, composite decks are a great choice around pools.

It lasts longer than traditional wood because there are no knots in the grain pattern so wear-and-tear will be less noticeable over time; however, if you want more durability than regular composite then consider using one made with recycled plastic instead (which will last even longer).

Aesthetic

The aesthetic value of composite decking is undeniable, whether in a garden setting or elsewhere. They have a modern flair and a breath of fresh air. Composite decking may be more expensive up front, but its low maintenance and its longer lifespan more than make up for the initial investment.

Sustainable

Keeping a sustainable garden is becoming increasingly popular, and you'll be happy to know that by selecting composite decking means choosing 95% recycled plastic and wood fibres.

Choice

Our customers can choose from a wide range of colours and textures to meet their specific needs and architectural preferences. Composite cladding is another popular choice.

DISADVANTAGES OF COMPOSITE DECKING

Before you go out and buy yourself some composite decking materials, keep in mind that they aren't perfect!

Initial Cost

Composite decking is relatively expensive compared to other options especially traditional wooden decking.

Weight

Whilst more durable and better quality, it's also heavier than most other materials which means it takes more effort to install—so if you're looking for something lightweight then this might not be right for you either!

All in all, composite decking is significantly more durable than wood—it will last at least twice as long as standard wood, and it doesn't require any kind of treatment or maintenance, so if you want to lay it and leave it then composite decking is the right choice for you.
